Berkhout Langeveld (WDP/Ter Beke): increasing demand for pre-packaged meat products
For Ter Beke subsidiary Berkhout Langeveld, Nijssen realised an environmentally friendly ammonia/CO2 installation.
The new building (surface area of 13,000 m2 ) is used for processing, refrigerating, storing and packaging meat products. All of Ter Beke’s logistics activities in the Netherlands will also be moved here. Berkhout Langeveld is specialised in slicing and packaging charcuterie products. Products are processed in five slicing halls equipped with an overpressure ventilation system. Before products are processed in the slicing halls, they must undergo rapid cooling in shock freezers, a stage in the process during which the exterior of the product is frozen. Each of the five shock freezers must be able to work at a different temperature; sometimes as low as -/- 30 °C!
Six separate CO2 direct expansion freezers
Nijssen built an ammonia/CO2 installation with three suction compressors for the ammonia circuit and six CO2 booster freezers to cool the shock freezers and the walk-in freezer. As the temperature of each of the installations needs to be regulated independently, Nijssen opted to use six separate compressor installations. A high level of efficiency is achieved through the application of a dual stage regulator, high evaporation temperatures and a very low pump capacity.
Residual heat
A heat recovery device was installed to accommodate defrosting of the air coolers as well as an underfloor heating system under the walk-in freezers. A hot gas heat exchanger was installed to heat the tap water used in cleaning.
Visual operating system
The Coolmaster control system developed by Nijssen regulates the entire installation. This control system features a visual operating system driven by custom programmed software. One of the key modules in this control system is the Nijssen Power Saving system, which achieves energy savings of approximately 15%.
