Photo Museum Rotterdam

The Dutch Photo Museum recently moved to the iconic and monumental Santos Warehouse in Rotterdam. This striking building now houses one of the Netherlands' leading photo collections: a rich and versatile archive reflecting the history and development of photography.

The move to a new, historic building placed high demands on climate control for archive storage. Photographic material is particularly vulnerable: fluctuations in temperature and humidity can cause irreversible damage to irreplaceable heritage. The challenge was to create storage facilities within the monumental Santos Warehouse that guarantee stable, climate-controlled storage — tailored to the specific preservation requirements of a significant photographic archive.

Nijssen has realized various storage facilities within the Santos Warehouse for the climate-controlled storage of the photo archive. The climate control systems ensure a constant temperature and humidity, so that the collection is sustainably preserved under optimal conditions for the future.

The realization took place within a complex construction context: working in and around a monumental building requires precise planning, good coordination with all involved parties, and craftsmanship in execution. The renovation proceeded smoothly; the client described the collaboration as constructive and pleasant.

Ambassadorship

Nijssen is an ambassador for the Dutch Photo Museum. In early February, we attended the festive opening of the museum at its new location in the Santos Warehouse. We are proud to be involved with this special museum and wish the photo museum great success at this beautiful and unique location.
